Capturing Canine Charm: A Study of Aaron Blaise’s Dog Character

Today, I want to share my experience recreating one of Aaron Blaise’s delightful character designs – a charming dog with an unmistakably animated personality. The original sketch, with its perfect blend of expressiveness and whimsy, showcases why Blaise is considered a master of character animation.

The subject is an endearing dog character caught in what appears to be a moment of innocent curiosity. Everything about the pose speaks to that quintessential dog behavior we all know and love – the elongated neck, the upward gaze, and that subtle hint of anticipation that suggests they might have spotted something interesting (perhaps a treat?) just out of frame. There’s also a small detail of what appears to be sticks or bones in the corner, adding to the narrative quality of the piece.

Beginning with the pencil stage, I focused on capturing the distinctive silhouette and proportions that make this character so appealing. The dog’s neck is wonderfully exaggerated, creating a graceful curve that leads the eye up to the expressive face. The body proportions are cleverly stylized – slightly chunky and rounded, giving the character a lovable quality that’s characteristic of animation design.

Moving to the fineliner was a crucial step in defining the character’s personality. Each line needed to convey confidence and fluidity, particularly in areas like the expressive eyes, the perked ears, and the subtle details of the paws. The challenge here was maintaining the spontaneity of animation-style linework while ensuring each stroke contributed to the character’s overall appeal.

The coloring phase with alcohol markers really brought the character to life. I built up the dog’s fur using various shades of brown and beige, creating depth and texture while maintaining the clean, animation-style look. The lighter belly and darker back created nice contrast, while subtle shadowing helped define the form. The bright blue background makes the character pop forward, creating that classic animation cel feel.

What I particularly love about this piece is how the character’s personality shines through in every element. The slightly raised eyebrows and wide eyes create an expression of innocent curiosity, while the upturned nose and alert ears suggest an engaging, playful nature. The way the character is sitting, with its elongated neck and attentive pose, captures that perfect moment of canine interest we’ve all seen in our own pets.

The small details really make the drawing sing – the subtle variations in fur texture, the way the light catches in the eyes, and the gentle shadows that ground the character. Even the simple addition of the sticks in the corner helps tell a story and set a scene.
