Capturing Lisbon’s Rainbow: A Colorful Journey Through the Narrow Streets

While wandering through Lisbon’s enchanting streets, I stumbled upon this mesmerizing alley that seemed to embody everything I love about the city. The buildings, painted in vibrant oranges, yellows, greens, and reds, stood proudly against the bright blue Portuguese sky. As a keen urban sketcher, I knew I had to capture this scene.

But getting the perfect photo wasn’t as straightforward as I’d hoped! Just as I was framing the shot, a local resident’s mischievous cat decided to make friends with my legs, weaving between them and nearly causing me to topple over. As I tried to maintain my balance while not dropping my camera, an elderly Portuguese lady watching from her balcony burst into laughter and shouted something that I couldn’t understand. She disappeared inside only to emerge moments later with a small piece of cheese to lure the cat away. Crisis averted, I finally got my shot!

Back home, I decided to recreate this colorful scene in my sketchbook. I started with a careful pencil outline, paying special attention to the perspective of the curving cobblestone street and the varying heights of the buildings. The architecture in Lisbon has so many beautiful details – the wrought iron balconies, the traditional windows, and those characteristic lamp posts that add such charm to every street.

Next came the fineliner work, where I traced over my pencil lines to define the structures and add the intricate details that make these buildings so distinctive. The most enjoyable part was definitely the final stage – bringing the scene to life with alcohol markers. I loved layering the bright colors to capture that distinctive Mediterranean palette that makes Lisbon so photogenic.

The end result is more than just a drawing – it’s a memory of that amusing moment, the friendly cat, the kind lady, and the incredible architecture that makes Lisbon such a special place. Every time I look at this sketch, I can almost hear the echoes of daily life bouncing off those colorful walls and feel the warmth of the Portuguese sun.

Looking at it now, I think my feline friend might have actually helped me find the perfect angle for this shot. Sometimes the best photos come from unexpected moments of chaos!
